Superhero Math and Science
In Summer 2016, MaST Academy scholars joined forces with Noyce scholars and members of the student organization FEMaS (Future Educators of Math and Science) to write a summer camp enlightening students on the math and science behind Superheroes! This camp was presented as a two-week camp to entering 8th grade Algebra students in Ysleta Independent School District. Students explored the STEM concepts behind:
- Superpowers like laser vision and superspeed
- Super-sized budgets for costumes, lairs, and gadgets
- The amounts of damage to the cities after a battle
- "Telekinesis" or, in reality, electrostatics and magnetism
The camp culminated in a field trip to UTEP where students met real-life heroes in the Health Science, Computer Science, Geology, and Engineering Departments then participated in super science demonstrations at a Physics Circus.
MaST would like to thank ADP, Robert Noyce Scholarship for Teaching Miners, Ysleta ISD, and MaST Mentor Teachers Blanca Rey Hernandez and Sue Huffman for leading the team of super scholars through writing and presenting the curriculum. MaST would also like to thank the YISD Mentor Teachers who assisted and gave valuable feedback to the scholars: Ginna Baray, Alejandro Vasquez, Angie Soto, and Adrian Villarreal.
